Psalm 51 (psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.)
A moving prayer for restoration asking for God’s favor, mercy forgiveness and cleansing.
1) Confession and accept responsibility vs. 3-6
3For I recognize my hrebellion;it haunts me day and night.
4Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say,and your judgment against me is just.
5For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.
2) Asks for God to remove the sin and renew him inwardly vs. 7-12
7Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8Oh, give me back my ijoy again;you have broken me—now let me rejoice.
9Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10jCreate in me a clean heart, O God.
kRenew a loyal spirit within me.
11Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy aSpirit from me.
12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you
3) Committal to a lifestyle of wisdom vs.13-17
13Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.
14Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves;
then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
15Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.
16You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one.
You do not want a burnt offering.
17The bsacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.
2Samuel 11:1-27 The story of David’s sin
David stayed behind and was not where God wanted him
1In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
David took Bathsheba for his own
As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.3He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”4Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her.
David sent for Uriah out of battle to be with his wife to get her pregnant
Then he told Uriah, “Go on home and relax.” David even sent a gift to Uriah after he had left the palace.9But Uriah didn’t go home. He slept that night at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard. 12“Well, stay here today,” David told him, “and tomorrow you may return to the army.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.13Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he couldn’t get Uriah to go home to his wife.
David sent Uriah into battle to be killed
14So the next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver.15The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”16So Joab assigned Uriah to a spot close to the city wall where he knew the enemy’s strongest men were fighting.17And when the enemy soldiers came out of the city to fight, Uriah the Hittite was killed along with several other Israelite soldiers.
Asked according to God’s steadfast love and mercy He has forgiven us of our sins
Ps 103:12
12He has removed our fsins as far from us as the east is from the west.
Ps 51: 5, 6
God desires truth, makes us know wisdom when we bring our sins to light-those we know we committed and those hidden in darkness. Ask that they be brought to light and name their sins
No one taught us to sin, to lie, it was inherited
Ps 51: 16, 17
Why do we need forgiveness?
A broken spirit and a repentant heart
Ephesians 6:12
12For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Sins occur in the heart first then you act upon them or you ask for forgiveness from the sin in our heart
Make restitution to God and then dwell on what He would have you to do.
Set your mind on heavenly things so you will not be tempted to sin
What does God want from us?
God wants sincerity for the inward and outward
John 14:1515“If you love me, obey my commandments.
Surgeon said “A heart crushed is a fragrant heart”
Don’t pretend, don’t be lazy
Romans 12:9-11
9Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.10Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.11Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.
Be filled with the fruit
Philippians 1:11
11May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
Philippians 1:12
12And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.
Be a holy living sacrifice
1And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
Romans 12:2
2Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God jtransform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s kwill for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Faith without works is dead
James 2:14-26
14What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have cfaith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of cfaith save anyone?15Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing,16and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
17So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
18Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”
19You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the ddemons believe this, and they tremble in terror.20How foolish! Can’t you see that efaith without good deeds is useless?
21Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?22You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.23And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.24So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
25Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.26Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.
Where do we start
Step 1 Judge your own sins
John 8:3-11
3As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
4“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery.5The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
6They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.7They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”8Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
9When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.10Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
11“No, Lord,” she said.
And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
Step 2 Have a honest heart, sincerity
Matthew 23:25-28
25“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence!26You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.
27“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.28Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Sir Richard Baker “sacrifice to our hearts”
Step 3 Teach wisdom, cleanse soul, purge old
Ps 51:7,8
7Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8Oh, give me back my ijoy again;you have broken me—now let me rejoice.
Step 4 Hid faces- let go and let God
Ps 51:9
9Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
Step 5 Create clean heart, new everything (heart, life, spirit)
Ps 51:10
10jCreate in me a clean heart, O God.
kRenew a loyal spirit within me.
Step 6 Beg for the Holy Spirit to come and stay
Ps 51:11
11Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy aSpirit from me.
Step 7 Restitution, Joy, and Acceptance
Ps 51:12
12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you
Step 8 Teachable spirits, will align with his love
Ps 51:13-15
13Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.
14Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves;
then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
15Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.
